We had 3 foals this year. Boy, I thought 1 foal was enough!
Born 03/28/2008 Maverick!
Honey was the first to give birth to a beautiful paint colt that we named Maverick. His training is going fairly well. He is alittle head shy for some reason, but loves to be scratched and petted all over. I have been working with picking up his feet but he isnt too keen on his halter training. I have leaned over his back and he seems to really like that - (of course with not much weight on him!) He is a flashy boy and very curious. He picks on his mom Honey alot. She actually doesnt get after him as much as she should. He is her first (and last) foal. She was brought in with Shadow August 2007. She and Shadow were both exposed to a 1/2 mustang colt. Maverick and Honey are both very healthy. Honey is still pretty wild as well as blind. She will stay with me as I do not think she will get too close to humans. Its a good thing that Kobb is in their paddock as well. He is a 30 year old Arab in which I acquired him in December 2007 from ASAP. He is a good herd leader and will get after Maverick when he needs it. But Maverick is your typical boy for sure! Loves to romp and tries to get into everything! He will be up for adoption when he is 5-6 months old. He wont be very tall, but is very stocky and solid. Should make a great trail horse. Adoption fee is $400.00
Born 04/07/2008 Baby Breeze (now named Shadow)
Breeze was born after a long and hard labor/birth with his mom Shadow. Shadow is a black pony who is blind in one eye and had little to no human contact in over 5 years. She came to my rescue along with Honey. Now, we knew that Shadow was pregnant. She was as big as a house last August! I kept thinking she would give birth and then hoped she wouldnt give birth until after the winter. She got extremely huge. The sire was the same colt that sired Honey's foal. Shadow had a very tough time and we had to help with the birth. She ended up getting a severe uterine infection, got septic and then colic. We treated her for each of these things. Breeze was born on Tuesday night and Shadow died on Friday during the day. She actually looked very good and was eating in the morning but when I came back from work, she had died in her stall. She was a feisty girl who didnt mind getting love from time to time. But I felt as much for Honey, because Shadow was Honey's eyes. Honey is doing fine because of her foal, but we hope to get her bonded with one of my other horses after Maverick gets a new home. At least I had a few months with Shadow. She got good grain, wormer and room to run. I feel bad because her last few days were treatments that included getting flushed out, IV antibiotics and then of course colic treatment and that is never fun for a horse. Breeze is now with his new family and has bonded with one of their mares and she treats him as her own. He is on goats milk now also! I have heard many reports on this. He is eating grain and hay also. Is getting very big and while he wont be tall, he should be a stunner. Even though it was tough feeding him every 2 hours while I had him, I would not trade that experience with him for anything. Thanks to a slew of friends (Jodi, Steve, Emily and Brianna) who came out while I was at work to feed him and Michele who stayed overnight to take a feeding or two. This was our schedule!
6am - me, 7 am me, 9 am Jodi, noon- Emily, 3pm, Steve, 5 pm me, 7pm me, 9pm Michele, 11pm Michele, 2 am Michelle and then it started over again!
Born 04/22/2008 Destinee
I have had comments from some people including a vet, that Missy probably got pregnant before Gabe was gelded. I am actually researching how long a stallion can be potent after he is gelded. I have already seen a bunch of articles and opinions and they range from 2 weeks to 6 weeks as being potent. Anyhow, Missy did get pregnant by Gabe. He was gelded on May 9, 2008, so it is possible they got together before! Just wanted to add this piece in. But the general consensus is NOT to have your newly gelded horse in with any mares for at least one month just to be sure! And not to get surprised by any oops!
Destinee was born to Missy, one of my mares who is not a rescue horse. When we got Missy for my husband to ride, she was already pregnant when we got her. She gave birth to Prize on 05/12/2004 and Prize is still with us. Well I did an oops in this next birth. I had a 1 1/2 year old TB/Quarter PMU foal that I rescued. Over the winter, he had not dropped yet so when the spring came, he was gelded in April 2007. Well after almost 4 weeks, I put him back into my herd! Well the boy was still potent! Yes, I know, stupid! But out of all of the mares, he at least impregnanted the best mare of them all. Destinee is a BIG girl also. But Missy had no problem giving birth. I came home one day and there she was standing next to her! She gave birth within her herd and they all watched and were careful of the foal and Missy. They belong to a tight herd. They include Jack (papa), Duke, Ace, and Prize. I guess I was in denial that Missy was actually pregnant as the sire, Gabe was so scared of Missy since she was the alpha mare but obviously the ho-bag seduced him and he wasnt afraid at least once! So the quote of he would never do that, or that i have never seen them together, or he should be shooting blanks by now have not been the case! I have learned my lesson! But Missy is a great mom and Destinee is a great filly! So she is 3/4 QH and 1/4 TB. She has potential to get very tall! Has the back end of a QH! We QH people love the big butts! She is a fast girl and loves, loves and loves to run! At this time she does have an adoptor. One of my volunteers, Emily loved Gabe, but could not adopt him at the time but now is in a position to buy his daughter! She is a spitting image of him! All sorel color with a star. No socks and Gabe has back socks. But she is a quick learner and is used to the halter, picks up her feet, lets me touch her everywhere and is learning to walk and ho on command without a leadrope. She will do anything for loving. She has this little 'pig-whinny' that i love. She is molting right now, so doesnt look the best in her face, but is now growing her new hair. Boy she is a looker! The way she runs and stops on a dime and how she looks, she could be about anything with discipline.
